Fall Shedding Versus Breakage and How to Tell Them Apart

What's Actually Happening
Every hair on your head is in one of three phases at any given time.
Anagen is the growth phase, lasting two to seven years. Roughly 85-90% of your hair is here right now.
Catagen is a brief transition phase lasting two to three weeks, during which the follicle shrinks and detaches from its blood supply. About one percent of your hair.
Telogen is the resting phase, lasting around three months. The hair is no longer growing and is simply held in place until a new hair pushes it out. Around 10 to 15 percent of your hair.

Losing 50 to 100 strands a day is normal. That number is an average, not a rule, and it scales with how much hair you have. Someone with high-density hair sheds more strands than someone with low-density hair while losing the same proportion.

Shedding and breakage arrive together. The same wash day that releases accumulated shed hair also involves detangling, which is when most breakage happens. The pile contains both, which is why sorting by bulb rather than by volume is the only reliable read.
The practical version: don't count strands on wash day. Count wash days. If you shed heavily every wash day and your length is holding, that's normal accumulation. If the pile is growing wash day over wash day and your length isn't moving, something else is going on.
What Actually Helps
Seasonal shedding resolves on its own. You cannot stop hair in telogen from falling out, and products claiming otherwise are selling you a timeline you were already on. What you can do is protect the hair you still have and avoid making the shed look worse than it is.
- Reduce manipulation while the shed is active. Fewer restyles, gentler detangling, looser styles.
- Detangle in sections on damp, conditioned hair. Shed hair tangles around growing hair. Rushing this is how a shedding problem becomes a breakage problem.
- Keep the scalp clean. Buildup doesn't cause shedding, but an irritated scalp doesn't help, and shed hair trapped at the scalp adds to the tangling problem.
- Skip tight styles for now. Tension on a head that's already shedding accelerates thinning at the hairline, which is the one form of loss that doesn't reliably reverse.
- Eat and sleep like it matters. Telogen effluvium triggered by illness, stress, restriction, or major life change shows up two to three months after the trigger. Sometimes the fall shed is actually a July stressor arriving on schedule.
What genuinely reduces the total is limiting how much hair you lose to breakage on top of the shed. Drying method matters more than most people account for here, because a shedding head of hair is handled more, tangles more, and is more vulnerable to the mechanical stress of a round brush and high heat. Drying under tension with reverse air rather than manipulation removes an entire category of loss from the equation during the months when you can least afford it.
When It's Not Seasonal
Most fall shedding is exactly what it looks like. These are the cases where it isn't, and they're worth taking to a doctor or dermatologist rather than troubleshooting at home.
- Shedding that continues past three to four months without tapering
- Visible scalp where it wasn't visible before, or a widening part
- Loss concentrated in patches rather than distributed evenly
- Shedding paired with fatigue, weight change, cold intolerance, or cycle changes, which can point to thyroid or iron issues
- Scalp pain, burning, tenderness, or visible scarring
- Loss at the temples and hairline specifically, which often indicates tension damage rather than shedding
Iron deficiency and thyroid dysfunction are two of the most common non-seasonal causes, and both are diagnosed with a routine blood panel. There's no reason to spend six months on products when a lab test answers the question.
Age-related changes are their own category and follow a different pattern, with more gradual thinning than acute shedding. What changes over the decades is worth understanding separately, because the response is different.
What to Expect Over the Next Few Months
A typical seasonal shed runs six to twelve weeks. You'll notice the increase; it will feel like it's getting worse for a few weeks; it will plateau; and then it will taper. Regrowth from the follicles that shed begins immediately, but new hair takes months to reach a visible length, so there's usually a stretch in winter where you see short new growth around your hairline and crown and mistake it for breakage.
Those short pieces standing up at your part in January are almost always regrowth, not damage. Check the ends. Regrowth tapers to a fine point. Breakage looks blunt or frayed.
